Group Norms

There are definitely group norms at SJSU. There are the explicit norms that are stated in various SJSU publications such as the smoking policy and the Student Conduct Code and the Student Organization Code of Conduct. Then there are the implicit norms such as raising hands to talk in class, taking turns talking, respecting the multicultural diversity at SJSU, not cutting in lines in the food court, etc.

In the group of individuals with whom I work, there are also group norms. We all signed documents when we were hired and periodically are reviewed on policies and procedures. We all must attend certain meetings. These are the explicit norms. The implicit norms include speaking quietly on the phone and while in conversation with fellow workers so as not to disturb the other workers, (also, a crucial norm since others cannot perform their jobs well when someone is disturbing them by talking loudly), taking turns using the microwave, saying “good morning,” “have a nice weekend,” etc. to each other, (a peripheral norm since this is not essential to the functioning of the work group), and giving a “heads up” to each other when someone will be using the printer for an extended job.

I identified the above norms from reading documents (explicit norms) and observing activities and behavior and violations of expected behavior or activity (implicit norms). I adapted to the norms by changing my behavior when necessary, such as since I tend to talk loudly, I needed to learn to speak quietly at work.

  1. Excellent post Lee, I like how you used the various SJSU publications such as the smoking policy and the Student Conduct Code and the Student Organization Code of Conduct. Alot students don't even know what the student conduct code is or know what the policy is about smoking. Although I must say that I have not seen students smoking the ones that I have seen can be seen walking around blowing smoke in the air like its the thing to do.

It would be interesting to know what kind of work you do that would require you to sign documents and later would be reviewed on policies and procedures. It has been a long time since I have been a line work that gets reviewed. This was a good post, keep up the good work.

  2. Hey Lee, Great post! Yes schools, colleges like SJSU have these formal rules and regulations that stand as norms for the students while using the facilities on campus, which are termed as Student Conduct Code and the Student Organization Code of Conduct. All the students are a part of that group no matter what. Your observation about the class norms is also excellent Lee, because we unconsciously abide by these norms such as raising hands, taking turns, being respectful of the instructor without even knowing that these are unsaid, yet expected norms. I also appreciate your effort to stick to the norms at your work place, by changing your behavior to lower down your volume because I know it is difficult as even I get in trouble for talking loudly at times. Good job!
